Ostional Wildlife Refuge

Location

It is located in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, between Punta India and the mouth of the Rio Nosara.

Description

The Ostional wildlife refuge protects a wide variety of wildlife but the most notable are the leatherback and Kemp's Ridley turtles. It also distinguishes a wide variety of seabirds. The refuge is the second most important point for nesting leatherback in Costa Rica. These shows can be seen during July to November. Other species of turtles as the Green Turtle also comes to Ostional for nesting.

As a measure against theft of eggs, villagers are allowed to collect a percentage of eggs each ambada.

Definitely these "arribadas" are the main attraction of this mission and shelter. Millions of Pacific turtles come to lay their eggs on its beaches every year giving visitors a unique and unforgettable experience.
