Description

Parque Nacional Volcán Irazú
Irazu Volcano National Park is home to the highest volcano in Costa Rica, El Volcan Irazu is at an altitude of 3,432 above sea level and is still active. It is one of the most visited national parks because it is just some 30 km from the province of Cartago and 50 miles from San Jose and its access roads are in perfect condition and also provides a beautiful sight to enjoy the journey.

Its wildlife is scarce due to cold weather and volcanic activity although their lands are very fertile thanks to the volcanic ash. Some of the animals that are found are mountain rabbits, coyotes, armadillo, the porcupine, weasel and red squirrel as well as birds like owls, rushes volcanero, carpenter Canet, yigüirro, jilguero.

The crater Diego de la Haya is perhaps the biggest attraction, has at its core a beautiful green lake.

The park has basic services, restrooms, drinking water and lavatories as well as picnic areas, cafeteria, viewpoints and numerous trails. It is worth reminding that carries warm clothes because is pretty cold up there.

Irazu Volcano National Park is a strategic point to use your telescope. At night, darkness and a clear sky provides a fabulous opportunity to observe the stars. During the day, with the naked eye can enjoy the panorama of the central valley and on clear days you can see both oceans. Using the telescope will be able to see beyond!
