Alajuela is the second largest province of Costa Rica (in terms of commerce, agronomy, and politics).
It is one of the most extensive and diverse provinces of the country, with elevations ranging from 2,704 (at
Poas Volcano) to the 92 meters above sea level, and at relatively short distances, can be seen drastic changes in the flora and fauna. Within its 9,752 square kilometres, Alajuela offers visitors stunning views of mountain ranges Central Tilarán and Guanacaste.
The views of the lush and fertile plains of San Carlos are well known and appreciated worldwide.
The main attraction for tourists is the
Arenal Volcano , in San Carlos. This is the most impressive volcano in the country and some say that of the world because of its constant eruptions and its nearly perfect cone shape. Alajuela also has the
Poás Volcano that although it is not as popular as the Arenal is quite near the center of the country and has one of the world's largest craters and the visitor can see it from above at a distance relatively close.
The center of Alajuela is similar to
San Jose but most small and quiet and is located a few kilometres from the main airport in Costa Rica and about 20 kilometers from the capital.
